A community initiative by the Nature Conservation Council of NSW developed with funding assistance from the NSW Government's Environmental Trust and the Illawarra Catchment Management Committee.
For information on bushwalking, birds and birdwatching, visit Wild Illawarra.
WEB version, designed and compiled by Chris J. Chafer for the Nature Conservation Council, October 2000
This WEB-based version of the database was compiled from data prepared by Mark Robinson as part of a National Heritage Trust grant in 1995-98.
The data come from a wide range of published and unpublished sources, principally lists of species compiled by Mark Robinson, Andes Bofeldt and Keven Mills. The database was provided to the NCC in an Access database that was poorly designed. This WEB-based version of that document has not sought to validate the site lists or the nomenclature of the species. The taxonomy and nomenclature of the species contained within this document are solely the responsibility of the original authors of the Access database.
Accompanying the database was a series of 1:25,000 scale topographic map sheets with the spatial location of the bushland sites drawn on the maps as polygons. These maps were scanned and brought into a Geographic Information System (GIS) as background images. The sites were digitized using on-screen digitizing techniques and superimposed on to location maps derived for digital data obtained from Land Information Centre on transport network, drainage and coastline. A grid of the area of coverage was arbitrarily designed and maps of each of the 44 maps exported in JPEG file format.
NOTE: The accuracy of the spatial location of each bushland site is the responsibility of the original authors and should be viewed as indicative only of the location of the sample site.
Future revisions of this database will include location maps of weed species and threatened species. An example of these is provided for the Threatened Species Zieria granulata.
